The Most Dangerous Castle in England -- Norham
Просмотров 24521 день назад
Hello :) as always don't forget to watch in the highest quality your device can comfortably handle for the best experience. Norham’s founder was Ranulph Flambard, Bishop of Durham from 1099 until 1128. In the medieval period the Bishops of Durham enjoyed near-kingly powers, in return for enforcing order along the English-Scottish border. The region could be wild and lawless, and sometimes erupt...

Don't forget to watch in the highest quality your device can handle. This is an amazing place, most of which is still underground. It was the largest Roman fort in County Durham, and evidence points to its construction in parallel w...

      @@Raybo1uk where I am on the prairies it’s been fluctuating between lots of rain and scalding hot days of 35-40C with the humidity. Lots of varied weather across this large country. Some are dealing with flooding and others (east and west coast) fires and evacuations of entire towns. Hopefully you’re having drier weather after your fair share of flooding last year. It can always be worse.

    Greetings from Canada Ray 🍁 Norham is fascinating! 900yrs of history, England and Scotland sitting side by side, separated only by the Tweed. No doubt a frightening place to live during those times. On my trip to England we flew into Prestwick and travelled by train down the coast. I was absolutely struck by the sight of Berwick-upon-Tweed. I’ll never forget it. I took multiple pictures of ion the way there and back. I always assumed it was part of Scotland, but google tells me it’s the most northern part of England. Now it all makes sense. The description, music, camera work, drone footage…another masterful piece of art Ray. I’m truly grateful for all you put into your videos. Ty and take care of yourself til next time. ❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧✋🤗- we hit 35 today with the humidex- summer is here 😎

      Hiya Jill 😃👋🤗 this castle is in an amazing spot and had lots of sieges. I definitely wouldn’t want to be crossing that river in a boat with missiles heading towards me 😂 Berwick is in Northumberland and around 2 and a half miles from the Border. I may head up there and do the town Walls walk at some point. The usual walk starts at the railway station and ends at the barracks (approximately 3 miles) unless you get lost of course 🤣 which is quite likely 🤣 I’m glad you enjoyed this one, I would normally have done more inside the inner Bailey but I wasn’t supposed to be in there due to safety issues, however, it is now reopened so if I’d gone a few days later it would have obviously been rebuilt 🤣🤣 why they close all these places due to “health & safety concerns” is beyond me. It’s been there hundreds of years, it’s not going to fall down overnight lol. One day it’s closed off , the next it’s reopened when nothing has changed…. Weird. It is in the care of English Heritage. Thank you as always for your kind comments 🤗 take care in that heat, we are having mid 20’s which is enough for me 😁🥵 Be safe 🙏🏻🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧

      Hellooooo 😃👋 yeah it’s a beautiful location, I think most of these buildings would have possibly been fairly cold and damp but they all had big fires lol. Many of course are still lived in but obviously have been updated a lot. Those trees have very stiff spikey leaves and believe me they are very sharp. There are a few at Belsay Hall near the castle. Weather is warming here a little but still intermittent showers. 90’s is too hot to do anything other than hide 🤣 so be careful in that heat. Doing ok here thanks, hopefully once the weather improves I’ll get further afield 😁🤗❤️🐈‍⬛

    Greetings from Canada Ray. Very sobering thinking about the 100’s of thousands of men and women who passed through or passed away at this site. All gone now. Not only were they faced with the horrors of war, but many were also faced with a global pandemic of epic proportions. It’s places such as this that serve as a stark reminder to those of us who have never had to face war, and the sacrifices of those who came before us. Such a beautiful landscape holding painful memories for so many. We must never forget. Most definitely a place that would move your soul. You captured the essence of the place well with your drone footage and numbering of the site. Well done Ray. Ty as always. Take care til next time my friend. 🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️🤗👋be well.

      Hi Jill 😃👋🤗 yes definitely very sobering to think of all the lives lost in all wars. I guess it is places like this that remind us of all the sacrifices made to protect the future for everyone. It is also the 80th anniversary today to commemorate the D-Day landings in Normandy when everyone regained their freedom through the sacrifice of others. Makes you wonder where the World would be now without all those brave souls. It is a beautiful area around there and eerily peaceful too. The landscape is covered quite a bit now but you can still see the lines from the air of many of the building placements which provides a better idea of the area covered. A bit different to my normal stuff but I did want to film this perhaps before it gets totally lost in years to come. Thank you as always for your wonderful comments which are always greatly appreciated. Until the next location…. 😁 Take care and keep safe 🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧👋

Loved the fall colours (my favourite season), but it’s nice to see how lush it is with springtime. I think the problem is that that little cub cannot move his hind legs, he is not able to run and jump like he should be able to do at his age. He looks hurt in that back. The lioness (mother) and the other lions in the pride realize his problem. If you look halfway through the video, the young lions don't attack him, but rather they touch him on the back to encourage him to move, to walk, to run, but he cannot. I think that is the serious problem of that cub, because if he is not able to walk and run he has no chance of surviving, and the other lions know it: they are trying to help him (they do not harm him), but he can hardly get up or stay standing. In this video that cub hardly walks at all, and every time he tries to get up and walk his hind legs fail him. Everyone else notices and tries to encourage him to get up and walk, but he can't. That's why the lioness looks at the camera sadly, because she is aware of that cub's problem. He won't be able to survive without walking, running and jumping. They will have to abandon him to his fate.

    Thanks for the video, I have been there many times and the excavations are still ongoing. There is a Time Team video on RUclips about the site and the much greater expanse of the site that is well worth watching. Not too far from there is the oldest Anglo-Saxon church still standing in England and you can see that many of the stones used to build the church were taken from the Roman fort. There are Roman inscriptions visible on the stone walls of the church. County Durham is a great place to explore and there are not many tourists who bother to go that far north. I was born only a few miles from Binchester. Cheers from New Zealand.

    Greetings from Canada Ray. 🍁What an incredible place. I’m so disappointed I missed seeing it while I was there. Right there, and staying in County Durham no less. No google etc in ‘88 lol. I do know for a fact that I saw more of England on my 1 month stay there than any of my relatives did in their entire lives of living there. So glad that I split my time up between visiting relatives and touring. The fort itself covers such a large area, but I was surprised at the size of the building complex that housed the exercise hall and baths. Roman ingenuity at its best. Like them or not, you can’t deny their contributions in architecture and engineering, among other things. I mean heated flooring, come on. lol. That alone would have been a treat. Great to see the outside baths and to have a look at the hand carved stone. Were you able to see the actual adult and child footprints? 👣 It’s the little things like this that I find the most moving. Brings everything into focus. Ty Ray. I really enjoyed this one. Beautiful drone footage at the end. Take care and bye for now. Hoping for sunshine for you and Alf. Here too. It’s been nothing but rain. 🇨🇦🇬🇧👋🤗🌞😎🐈‍⬛

      Hiya Jill 😀👋🤗 it’s a shame you didn’t get to visit this place during your visit, it’s a fascinating place. The guy on reception gave me a 15 minute talk before I started my walk which gave me a good insight which I found helpful. I think it’s great that they built around it to show exactly how it would have been used. That underfloor heating and ducted air was very clever. I did see the footprints but didn’t film them as I didn’t think they would come out well in the light but totally amazing. When I asked about them I was told they were probably running due to the deeper indentations of the toes and heel, probably getting chased by the guy who just laid the concrete 🤣🤣 I will revisit in future to see what has been updated and uncovered, I will definitely film them then. Thank you as always for taking time to watch and comment 🤗 Wishing you a great week ahead. Be safe and take care 🙏🏻🤗🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧

    Morning Ray this was great, so interesting to see and read about and you always capture these places so well. That place seemed so big and your said most is stull underground too. You also said it was the largest in County Durham and in the whole of Northern Britain . So good that they are still excavating here, seeing those bathhouses and the underfloor heating systems must be fascinating. You showed so much on this video Ray, sooo interesting 👏👍~ Anna

      Hi Anna 😃👋 thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed this video. It is a fascinating place, those Romans were certainly clever people. Most of the site is under a farmers property but as you saw from the ground survey it is an absolutely huge site, it must have been so busy in its day. I’ll no doubt be going back once more has been uncovered to see what they find 😃 Thank you for popping in it’s always appreciated and nice to see you here, I hope you and Alf are both keeping well 🙏🏻🤗👍🏻

    Greetings from Canada Ray. 🍁So glad you decided to film part of your trip up there. Hermitage is an impressive piece of history. The Archbishop of Glasgow’s sermon (curse) pretty much sets the tone of the hate felt between the English and the Scots. No mistaking those words. I can’t imagine being imprisoned in such a place knowing death will not be swift or merciful. Brutal times to be living in. Loved how you ended the video with the blue of the sky reflected in the brook and drone footage of Hermitage and the beautiful landscape that surrounds her. Ty as always Ray. Be safe and well til next time. ❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧🤗☀️🌞👋

      Hiya Jill 😃🤗 thank you. It is a beautiful drive up there I didn’t think anyone would want the full journey AND a castle video 🤣 most don’t get fully watched even when 3 minutes 🤣🤣 Yea there was a lot of hatred in those days hopefully it won’t happen again. It doesn’t even bear thinking about being stuck in that tiny hole starving to death, -- barbaric! I had to sneak the drone up as they don’t allow them over the grounds, no idea why especially when there’s nobody about but such is life nowadays, rules, rules and more rules 🤣🫢 at least I got a little footage then put car into sport mode 🤣🤣🤣 a clean getaway hahaha 🤣 I hope your week is going well, we have heavy rain with localised flooding forecast the next few days so I better order that boat, not sure I can row 🚣 with webbed feet 😂😂 until next time. Insider info….. The Romans are coming in the next one 😁😊👍🏻🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧🌹

    Greetings from Canada Ray! 🍁🫎 Eight centuries of history. Even though I shouldn’t be by now, I’m always surprised by how light these places are inside, with intentional use of the light stone, and high ceilings and beams. Gorgeous floors on the second floor rooms. No shoddy work here. Top quality throughout to stand the test of time. As always, the drone shots tie it all together, giving us the full picture of just how beautiful Aydon Castle,and the land she stands on, is. Thanks for this unexpected treat Ray. Very welcome on this gloomy rainy day(s) we’re having. Take care til next time. ❤🇨🇦🇬🇧 🤗🤞☀️😎

      Hi Jill 😃👋😊🤗 yes I think their use of materials and windows contributed to that, although cameras do always lighten up images too. I’ve been in places which are really dark inside but thankfully the camera has the ability to increase the light exposure. The materials used especially flooring are a thing of the past now, laminate and tiles saw to that lol. The next video should keep you occupied for 30+ minutes, my road trip to Hermitage which I hope you will enjoy, and hopefully your weather will improve soon, it is so unpredictable nowadays. 🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧🌹🌞

    Hello Ray, lovely castle love the fireplaces and the the layout of it. But I have a question ❓ where did the ppl get all the stone in order to build something so large. I wouldn't mind living in that. The beams and everything about it is beautiful just needs some tlc. And the greenery is beautiful too. Ty for sharing this. Btw I so many questions.......🥰😊❤️🐈‍⬛🤗

    • @Raybo1uk
      @Raybo1uk 2 месяца назад

      Hiya yes I agree it could be made into a habitable home but undoubtedly would cost a fortune to do it. It was of course lived in until 1966, but I’m sure a lot has changed since then. The stone could come from various buildings including local unused or derelict places. Northumberland has a lot of stone and was quarried to build, like Belsay Hall for example. The Roman Wall I’m sure was also plundered, there a many many mile castles which are only a few feet high now. However they built these places would have taken a lot of manpower and hours to cut and transport these huge stones. Thank you as always for popping in 🤗👍🏻❤️🐈‍⬛

    Greetings from Canada Ray! 🍁 Cragside House is definitely one of the best places that you’ve featured on this channel. If people haven’t seen the previous videos, you need to check them out. Lord Armstrong was such a smart, innovative man who lived to be 90 (1810-1900). If the Turkish bath was completed in 1870, that means he would have enjoyed these rooms for 30yrs. So, it WAS Prince Edward aka “Bertie,” heir apparent, that would have been the frequent guest at Cragside enjoying a Turkish bath. That was my guess (had to look it up to be certain), but not in the least surprised lol. A man of questionable character to be sure. Also, not too shabby digs for officers during wartime. Not a bad location for barracks either. Thanks again for putting this all together Ray. I know it takes alot of time and effort on your part. I, for one, am always grateful. Getting a notification from you brightens up my day. Raybo1uk aka a little “Ray” of sunshine ☀️ 😎 take care til next time! 🇨🇦🇬🇧🤗❤️

      Hiya Jill 😃🤗👋 it is an amazing place. The innovation and design of the house and the whole surrounding area are fantastic. It’s hard to believe how they did everything. Bertie was maybe a “dirty Bertie” 🤣🤣🤣 The officers during wartime would have been spoilt in that place, I wonder if they used the snooker table too 😁 I have a couple more videos currently to do, one is a road trip so might take some time to piece together but hopefully you will enjoy them both once uploaded. Thank you as always for your lovely comments and compliments which for me make this all worthwhile. Doing a 200 mile round trip to get very few views can be challenging to the mind and pocket haha. Until the next one take care 🙏🏻 be safe and look after yourself 🤗❤️🌹🇨🇦🇬🇧

    Greetings from Canada Ray. 🍁 You’re spoiling us with all these videos. What an impressive building inside and out. Loved when you zoomed out to include the stone wall. It makes for a beautiful picture, nestled in the trees. True or not, I enjoy the rumour of a secret tunnel to Seaton Delaval Hall. Adds a bit of mystery, adventure, and romance to the place. Very kind of Lisa from Burradon House and Cottages for allowing you access. Burradon Tower is a great glimpse into the past, however brief. I checked out the link to Burradon farm. Absolutely stunning place. Ty as always Ray! Enjoy your weekend. - 🇨🇦🇬🇧 - bye for now 👋 🤗❤️

      Hiya Jill 😃👋🤗 I’ll have to do a longer one at some point if it ever stops raining ☔️ We have more rain on the way it appears. I’ll be growing webbed feet soon 🤣 Going back to the 1500’s the stone in this building is still holding up pretty well apart from losing 2 floors and a roof. It’s probably not safe enough for regular visitors though. It is quite a distance from Seaton Delaval Hall so if there is a tunnel it would have taken many years to excavate and complete, but who knows, next time I’m there I’ll pose the question, I’d like to find the source, I’ll take a torch 🔦 just in case 😂😁 The cottages have been renovated to a high standard, I never checked prices though, but they are definitely in a nice spot. Hopefully it won’t be too long before I get out on another adventure lol, until then stay safe and take care and thank you as always for your support 😘🤗🙏🏻❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧

    I was walking around the area this week and was intrigued as to why anyone would build a dovecot on a hill away from any buildings. The whole construction looks wrong to be a dovecot though the oldest OS maps call it Dovecot Hill. A mid-18c map shows it as a castle and given where it is and the numbers of Bastles in Northumberland, it looks more like a fortification to me.

    • @Raybo1uk
      @Raybo1uk 2 месяца назад

      I tend to agree Alan, although I’m not aware what buildings may have been there hundreds of years ago. It could of course have been built in the style of a castle to warn people away from a distance. I guess we will never know for certain 🤷‍♂️ Thank you for stopping by and commenting 👍🏻

    Greetings from Canada Ray! 🍁 What a fantastic little place. Pretty cool seeing the windmill and wind turbine in the same field. 275yrs of technology. Looks like the perfect day to be filming. Amazing footage and views of the windmill and surrounding area. Interesting how you can see what appears to be the same green plant growth (moss?) on the rounded top of the structure as on the ground. The hawk was a bonus. Just out of curiosity, the two fireplaces, would they be there to keep workers warm or did people actually live in the windmill? Thanks as always Ray. Hope all is well with you and Alf. Bye for now! ❤🇨🇦🇬🇧🤗✌️🐾🐈‍⬛

    • @Raybo1uk

      Hiya Jill 😃🤗 yes it was quite a find haha. I actually went on two different days as the first time I covered the gate with my car and as I was filming I heard a “hoi”! 🤣 just my luck for the farmer to turn up with his huge machine for spraying the fields with insecticide so I had to run back to let him in 🤣🤣 decided to wait a few days for the chemicals to settle then went back to get some drone footage. That hawk was beautiful colours. How technology has moved on eh… another 275 years and there will probably be no need for windmills, probably all be done wirelessly 🛜 😂 I think the windmill would have been occupied and it was probably pretty bleak living in it in the middle of a field, so fireplaces would definitely have been a nice luxury. I wouldn’t fancy being the coal delivery man though 🤣🤣 I’ve not researched a lot online but I wonder if there were any photos? Were cameras even invented then🤷‍♂️😂. Today is supposedly our warmest day of the year so far but that wind is cold, it’s around 17c lol, our mini heatwave 😂🤣 Alf and I are fine thanks, he’s snoring at the moment 🤣🐈‍⬛ hope all is well with you and your weather is also finally improving 🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧💋
